Introduction

The course presented here corresponds to the two semesters that make up the fourth year of the Degree in Architecture. Its position goes beyond the halfway point of the studies, which implies approaching the architectural project with the convergence of all the knowledge acquired during the first three years of the degree. After having learned basic project mechanisms and technological tools, students will be able to integrate into architectural forms the knowledge acquired as watertight compartments. The substantial aspect of the course will be to immerse ourselves in two areas inherent to the architectural profession that develop in an equivalent and simultaneous manner: criticism and materialisation. For this reason, analysis and debate around various contemporary issues will be encouraged, as a starting point for proposing solutions in accordance with the aspirations and possibilities of our time.

We would therefore affirm that this teaching project pursues two objectives: The critical construction of the student, whereby the design studio becomes a research setting that makes it possible to combine their knowledge in order to use the design exercise as a tool for development and transformation. The technical construction of the student, using the project as a catalyst for different forms of knowledge and crafts learned in previous courses. For this reason, emphasis will continue to be placed on the “what” and also on the “how” from the genesis of the project, in an attempt to unite technique and will.

This academic proposal is conceived with a multifaceted perspective that allows for the interpretation of the complexity of the present and the acquisition of specific skills to operate in this context.
